There’s always time for tea – and these 3 crochet mug warmer patterns are so simple you’ll have them hooked up in time for elevenses! These DIY mug warmer projects are quick to make and great for practicing your crochet stitches, plus they’ll help to keep your drink and hands warm and cosy. Our first two crochet mug warmer patterns use clever stitches to create some fabulous textures, and our last pattern keeps it simple with some classic half treble stitches! You will need
Bessie May Smile (100% Extra Fine Merino, 50g/120m) or alternative DK yarn, 1 ball each of:
- Lichen (3060) – Lime green
- Berry (3080) – Rose pink
- Kiss (3090) – Light pink
A small amount of embroidery thread in Brown and White
Measurements
Each crochet mug warmer measures approx 24 x 5cm (9½ x 2in) without the strap.

Free Crochet Mug Warmer Patterns
Bauble Mug Hug
With Kiss, ch13.
Row 1 (RS) Dc in second ch from hook and in each ch to end, turn. [12 sts]
Row 2 Ch1 (does not count as st), (dc in next st, dtr in next st) repeat to end, turn.
Row 3 Ch1, dc in each st to end, turn.
Repeat Rows 2-3 until work measures 24cm, or the length required to fit around your mug.
Do not fasten off.
Strap
Row 1 Ss into first 4 sts, ch1 (does not count as st), dc in st at base of ch, dc in each of next 5 sts, turn, leaving rem sts unworked. [6 sts]
Rows 2-3 Ch2 (counts as htr), htr in each st to end, turn.
Row 4 Ch2 (counts as htr), htr in next st, ch2, skip 2 sts (buttonhole made), htr in each of last 2 sts, turn.
Row 5 Ch2 (counts as htr) htr in each st and ch to end, fasten off.
Ridge Mug Hug
With Lichen, ch15.
Row 1 (RS) Dc in second ch from hook and in each ch to end, turn. [14 sts]
Row 2 Ch1 (does not count as st), working in back loops only, dc in each st to end, turn.
Row 3 Ch1 (does not count as st), dc in each st to end, turn.
Repeat Rows 2-3 until work measures 24cm, or the length required to fit around your mug.
Do not fasten off.
Strap
Row 1 Ss into first 5 sts, ch1 (does not count as st), dc in st at base of ch, dc in each of next 5 sts, turn, leaving rem sts unworked. [6 sts]
Rows 2-3 Ch1 (does not count as st), dc in each st to end, turn.
Row 4 Ch1 (does not count as st), 2dc, ch2, skip 2 sts (buttonhole made), dc in each of last 2 sts, turn.
Row 5 Ch1 (does not count as st), dc in each st and ch to end, fasten off.

Simple Stitch Mug Hug
With Berry, ch13 (counts as 11 sts and 1 htr).
Row 1 (RS) Htr in third ch from hook and in each ch to end, turn. [12 sts]
Row 2 Ch2 (counts as htr) htr in each st to end, turn.
Repeat Row 2 until work measures 24cm, or the length required to fit around your mug.
Do not fasten off.
Strap
Row 1 Ss into first 4 sts, ch1 (does not count as st), dc in st at base of ch, dc in each of next 5 sts, turn, leaving rem sts unworked. [6 sts]
Rows 2-3 Ch1 (does not count as st), dc in each st to end, turn.

To Finish each crochet mug warmer
Sew button on Cosy to correspond with buttonhole on Strap. Spray lightly with starch on the WS and warm iron over using a cloth.
Tea Bag Tag.
Cut a piece of pink felt approx 2 x 3cm for each mug hug. Using a pencil, lightly mark in the word TEA to the centre of your felt tea bag. With brown thread, stitch in the letters carefully, following your guidelines. Position your felt in the bottom centre of your mug hug and whipstitch using corresponding yarn. Secure a length of white thread to the top of the felt, bringing the needle up from behind the felt so that the end is hidden. Take the yarn over the top of the mug warmer and secure on the reverse.
